A small historic village on the northeast side, with Geist-era subdivisions around it. Here is what Oaklandon is, which government runs it, and what to check before you buy.
Start with the map. Filter by price, beds, and neighborhood.
Oaklandon started as a village platted in 1849 on the northeast side of Marion County, about 15 miles from downtown. Today it's inside the City of Lawrence, which annexed it in the 1970s. That detail matters more than it sounds: Lawrence is one of the four “excluded cities” under Unigov, with its own mayor, council, police, fire, water utility and parks department.
The historic core is small. The Oaklandon Historic District, listed on the National Register in 2013, covers about 10 acres and 38 buildings from roughly 1908 to 1941 along Oaklandon Road and Maple Street. It is a National Register district only — I found no local design review. Around it, suburban subdivisions spread south from Geist starting in the mid-1980s, and several carry “Geist” in their names.
The stat card shows Lawrence Township, the same basis as my Lawrence page, because the MLS has no clean Oaklandon boundary. The township loosened a little this year — days to contract went from 9 to 15 and supply edged up to 2.3 months — while the median held near $292,500. Oaklandon's subdivisions near Geist and the village core don't necessarily track that, so I pull actual comparables for any specific house.
What you are actually buying: a Lawrence address with Geist and Fort Harrison State Park nearby, a small historic village, and more house for the money than the Hamilton County side of the reservoir. What you are giving up: a quick drive downtown, and quiet on the blocks next to the rail line and Pendleton Pike.

A historic village, a railroad, a six-lane highway and Geist-era subdivisions all sit within a couple of miles of each other.
The 6300–6400 blocks of Oaklandon Road and the 6400 block of Maple Street: Classical Revival, Craftsman and bungalow buildings from about 1908 to 1941. Older homes; budget for what century-old systems need.
See homes →An active CSX line runs just north of the historic district, next to Oaklandon Play Park and the restored balloon-painted water tower. Expect train noise close to the tracks.
See homes →The six-lane road along the village's south edge. INDOT's safety project adds center medians in place of the turn lane, which changes left-turn access for some properties, and the city has been planning a zoning overlay for the corridor.
See homes →The suburban neighborhoods that followed the Geist growth wave from the 1980s on. Check which city and school district each one is in; the reservoir area itself was annexed by Fishers in 2010, not Lawrence.
See homes →Fort Harrison State Park, about 1,700 acres with trails and a stretch of Fall Creek, is southwest of Oaklandon, and the private Old Oakland Golf Club is nearby.
See homes →Oaklandon is served by the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, which runs Oaklandon Elementary. The district's high schools, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North, are elsewhere in the township. Some nearby Geist-area addresses are in other districts, so confirm the assignment for the specific address.
I found no MSD Lawrence Township referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The district's 2019 capital referendum, approved at up to 24.99 cents per $100 of assessed value over 20 years, is already on tax bills. Budget for it; it sits outside the 1% cap.
Because Lawrence is an excluded city, Oaklandon homeowners deal with the City of Lawrence for city services and permits and with Marion County for county matters such as assessment. It's worth knowing who to call before you need to.
Pendleton Pike is the main road, and Oaklandon is about 15 miles northeast of downtown. Drive your actual route at your actual start time before you commit.
Indiana caps homestead property tax at 1% of gross assessed value under the circuit breaker, so most owner-occupants land at or near that figure before any voter-approved referendum rate, which sits outside the cap. Rentals and second homes are capped at 2% and should be modeled separately. Marion County's local income tax is 2.02%, per the Indiana Department of Revenue's county rate notice effective October 1, 2026. Confirm assessments with the Marion County Assessor.
If you want Hamilton County schools or a Fishers address, search Geist and Fishers directly. If train noise would bother you, avoid the blocks by the tracks. If you want the Lawrence market as a whole, see my Lawrence guide.
Oaklandon is inside the City of Lawrence, which annexed it in the 1970s. Lawrence is an excluded city under Unigov, with its own mayor, council, police, fire, water utility and parks, while Marion County handles county functions.
The MLS has no clean Oaklandon boundary. For context, single-family homes across all of Lawrence Township had a median near $292,500 year to date through August 2026. Oaklandon homes vary around that, so I pull actual comparables for a specific house.
The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, which runs Oaklandon Elementary. Some nearby Geist-area addresses are in other districts, so confirm the assignment for the specific address.
The Oaklandon Historic District was listed on the National Register in 2013, covering about 10 acres and 38 buildings from about 1908 to 1941. It is a National Register listing only; no local design review was found.
No. Oaklandon is a historic village inside the City of Lawrence. Geist Reservoir lies to the north, and most of the Geist area was annexed by Fishers in 2010. Some subdivisions near Oaklandon use Geist in their names.
INDOT's safety project replaces the center turn lane with medians and adds sidewalks and intersection work along about five miles of Pendleton Pike, and the City of Lawrence has been planning a zoning overlay for the corridor.
I'm Wes Johnston, a Realtor with Trueblood Real Estate, based in Fishers. I cover the whole Indianapolis metro, and every guide on this site is built the same way: MIBOR numbers, public sources, and the trade-offs a listing description won't mention.
My job isn't to open doors. It's to tell you what a house is actually worth, what's wrong with it, and whether it's the right move for what you're trying to do — then negotiate hard on your behalf and own the process from contract to close.
If you're two years out, that's fine. Most of my best clients started with a question, not a showing.
Fishers-based. Honest numbers, every part of the metro. Committed to your success.
